Description
The best time to plant centipede grass seed is between April and August. Seed should germinate in 2 to 3 weeks. 1 lb covers 2,000 to 4,000 sqft.
Centiped grass is a warm season, thick sod forming, uniform growing, and medium to light green colored grass. It is a slow growing, creeping grass with short stems growing upward. This makes it resemble a centipede insect and is why it got its name. Centipede is the lowest maintenance of the warm season grasses.

Directions for Planting Centipede Grass Seed
- After you have tilled or harrowed the soil, smooth it with hand rakes. Get rid of debris and existing grass. Fertilize the seedbed with 10lbs per 1000 square feet using a complete fertilizer. Do not use weed and feed fertilizer.
- Mix the seed with dry sand and spread the seed using a broadcast spreader. About 10 pounds of sand to one pound of seed will assure even distribution of seed.
- The seed should be planted into the upper quarter inch of soil. You can do this by lightly raking the seedbed.
- Keep the seedbed moist for3 to 4 weeks after planting. Mow weeds as needed to prevent seedlings from being shaded.
